Our Top 5 Drought Tolerant Plants

It’s that time of year when the summer sun is at its hottest, leaving many plants dry and dehydrated. Take the stress away from your garden and choose some specimens which thrive in dry soil, whilst providing pops of colour and fantastic scents for you to enjoy!

AchilleaA herbaceous perennial with green leaves and scented flowers, achillea like dry soil and can cope well with low moisture levels. Achillea will bloom into groups of delicate flowers from early summer to early autumn and provide a great source of colour in the garden.

CeanothusAlso known as Californian lilac, this stunning flowered, evergreen shrub has a massive quantity of blue flowers and a green, dark characterful foliage. This versatile plant can be used in borders, as informal hedges and ground cover. It’s also great for attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to your garden.

GeraniumThese delicate looking flowers are in fact very hardy and provide a long spell of colour in the garden, flowering from late spring to early autumn. Geraniums do well in dry, sunny locations and once established will not need a huge amount of watering.

VerbenaBest in a group this 'see through' wavy-stemmed, deciduous perennial (herbaceous) has clusters of small scented purple flowers for months in Summer and Autumn. It has green leaves. It likes sun, dry or moist soil and is happy in acid (ericaceous), alkaline or neutral soil. Great for borders as well as containers.

RosemaryRosemary is a fabulous herb and can of course be used as an ingredient in your cooking, in addition to being a fragrant addition to the garden. Requiring very little watering in dry weather, it’s happiest in full sun and well-drained soil. As an added extra, rosemary also flowers in spring and early summer, so can add even more colour to the garden!
